Our Democratic Principles
DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES POLICY
At The Hamilton and Alexandra College, we should appreciate the advantages and acknowledge the sacrifices that have been made by many to enable the students of today to enjoy a safe, calm and structured environment in which to learn.
Underpinning our education is a commitment to the principles and practice of Australian democracy. These include a commitment to:
- elected government
- the rule of law
- equal rights for all before the law
- freedom of religion
- freedom of speech and association
- the values of openness and tolerance
The College believes that with opportunity comes responsibility. We seek to develop in students an ability to recognise their need to
- always strive to achieve my best
- not interfere negatively with the learning of others
- find ways in which I can help others and work to make our school community a better place for everyone.
The College will emphasise the above principles through its service programs, pastoral care program, weekly newsletters, assemblies, information sessions, and communications with parents. The role of government, the rule of law and the democratic process will be taught at the appropriate levels according to the Victorian Curriculum.
Whilst the school has a relationship with the Uniting Church in Australia, services conducted will seek to be inclusive rather than exclusive. This is in keeping with the church’s approach and its willingness to engage with other faiths.
Any member of the school community who feels they are not treated according to the principles outlined above is encouraged to make formal contact with a member of the College Executive team. Such concerns or complaints will be responded to fairly and with no recrimination.
