ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT 

All students aged over 16 years of age must have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Score of 5.0 OR 4.0 (if undertaking preliminary English language tuition of no more than 30 weeks).

Students from the People's Republic of China (PRC) only who do not wish to provide an IELTS score may access a waiver.

Criteria for Waiver:
  • Evidence of satisfactory results of a test undertaken in English, under appropriate Exam conditions with a qualified tester
    or
  • Evidence that they have completed a Middle School Certificate (Year 9) and
    • obtained a result that would allow them to continue to an academic stream in Senior School in PRC
      and
    • studied English from Years 7 to 9 and obtained a result of at least 75% for English language studies in their Middle School Certificate
      and
    • the applicant has, at the time of the visa application, a letter from the education provider supporting consideration of the waiver

GENERAL ACADEMIC REQUIREMENT

Since students are expected to study a normal Victorian School Curriculum, they should be competent in Mathematics and Sciences and be willing to take part in all school activities. Students should display a conscientious and diligent attitude to study, both in and out of class.

ESL (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE)

We offer a range of programs to support our international students to improve their English skills.

Intensive English Language Preparation Program (IELPP)

This course has been specifically developed for The Hamilton and Alexandra College:
  • run over the first four weeks of Semester 1 (February) and Semester 2 (July)
  • two levels:
    • Elementary (Years 7 and 8)
    • Intermediate (Years 9 and 10)
  • small classes (no more than 8 students)
  • constant monitoring of how the students are adjusting to their new environment, academically, socially and emotionally

ORIENTATION PROGRAM

This program familiarises new students with our school and the larger Hamilton community.
 

ESL CLASSES

The number of students in all of these classes is small so that each student can receive intensive instruction and support:
  • Years 7 and 8 students receive intensive English instruction in small group classes aimed at supporting their learning in mainstream subject classes
  • Years 9 and 10 students attend ESL classes in addition to mainstream English classes
  • Years 11 and 12 students attend VCE ESL classes

HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE

Individual tutorial assistance from College staff members is available every week night during the boarders scheduled Prep (homework) sessions.
